Beginning Weds., Sept. 15 through Fri., Oct. 15, Del Real Foods celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month, the annual commemoration honoring the history and contributions of Hispanic and Latinx Americans!

National Hispanic Heritage Month actually began as Hispanic Heritage Week, after California Congressman George E. Brown introduced House Joint Resolution 1299 in June 1968. The resolution, co-sponsored by 19 congressional members, was intended to pay homage to the critical role Hispanic Americans played in numerous aspects of life in the United States. The original idea was to highlight September 15 and 16 as the “week,” with each of those days corresponding to independence day celebrations in Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua (Sept. 15) and Mexican Independence Day (Sept. 16). President Lyndon P. Johnson signed the resolution into law on Sept. 17, 1968.

Nearly 20 years later, California Rep. Esteban E. Torres began the work of expanding Hispanic Heritage Week into a month-long yearly observance; President Ronald Reagan signed Public Law 90-498, introduced by Sen. Paul Simon of Illinois, into law in 1988, making Hispanic Heritage Month official. And President George H.W. Bush, who’d been one of the original Hispanic Heritage Week sponsors, became the first president to formally declare September 15th-October 15th as Hispanic Heritage Month.
